Hughes 9211 HDR Inmarsat BGAN – G-layer takes delivery of the first unit

a box from hughes is always excitingAn exciting morning at G-Layer HQ, today the courier called in with a special delivery from our supplier. It’s our first Hughes 9211 Inmarsat BGAN terminal, perhaps the very first to arrive downunder?

We’ve been waiting a while for delivery of this new generation class 1 terminal and our end customer will be finally pleased to receive his long waited HDR BGAN.

Our customer wishes to remain anonymous, we certainly respect his wishes, but we got permission to grab some shots for the blog.

Hughes 9211 – what’s new?

packagingThe 9211 is the newer terminal from Hughes Network Systems, the long announced replacement for the 9201, the industry standard, mainstay of many broadcasters, war-zone correspondents, NGOs and disaster relief agencies.

It’s lighter and more compact than its predecessor, but with the same level of ingress protection. Unlike the 9201, it has a LCD display and can be activated without the need for a laptop. A build in WiFi access point makes it very versatile and suitable for multiple users.

The great innovation is under the bonnet, the Hughes 9211 is an HDR terminal, capable of asynchronous upload and download data rates, ideal for time critical applications such as live video streaming and remote content delivery. Its portability makes it the ideal pick for field reporters.

Also the price tag is interesting, making it much more affordable than the competitor Thrane & Thrane.

We can see a bright future for the 9211 and hopefully many more orders coming for the type.

As it came, so it goes – Hughes 9211 HDR BGAN with the courier for final delivery

satelite internetWe just had enough time to test the new unit, making sure everything is in good order and the terminal “sees” it’s Inmarsat I-4 bird loud and clear. Unfortunately, the order was placed a while ago and the delivery was delayed because of the silly season. We could not hold the unit a single day longer. Certainly we would have love to check out the HDR features of Hughes 9211, but I’m sure we’ll get some postivie feedback very soon.

We prepared the Hughes 9211 in a brand new orange Pelican Case, as per customer’s request and we handed over the package to the next available courier.
